Graduated from the BGH School of Nursing in 1972, worked as a staff nurse at hospitals in Saskatoon and Victoria, travelled through Europe with brother Frank (1974), travelled through Asia with David and his brother Barry Ford (1975), and married David in 1976.
We operated the "Tasty Spot Restaurant" from 1977-1982, served lots of ice cream cones and cooked lots of hamburgers during the summer months, and during the winter the two of us travelled extensively through Mexico, Central America, various Pacific island groups, New Zealand, and Australia.
Worked as an Institutional Nurse at the Brandon Correctional Centre, an Instructor in the RN Refresher Program at Assiniboine Community College, a staff nurse in the Intensive Care Unit and Recovery Room at the Brandon General Hospital, and then various nursing education positions at the BGH after daughter Sheena was born in 1982.
Attended the University of Victoria and received my BN degree (1987), attended the University of Manitoba and received my MN degree (1993), attended the University of British Columbia and received my PhD in Nursing (2005).
Backpacked through western China (1988) with David, and our family has since backpacked through the Middle East, driven an RV in Europe, tented in Mexico, safari through South Africa, travelled in southeast Asia, and visited various Caribbean islands.
More recent employment was Director of Nursing Education for the Brandon General Hospital (1993-1997), professor and program coordinator for the University of Manitoba at their Brandon Site (1997-2006), then hired by Brandon University in 2004 and am currently an Associate Professor in the School of Health Studies and Chair of the Department of Nursing.
Certified as a scuba diver in Belize in 1991 and now have 301 open water dives (mostly in the tropics!), just returned from a one month scuba trip through Hawaii, various islands in Micronesia, Guam, and Palau.
Long-term academic interest has been in developing Clinical Practice Guidelines for nurses and specifically the best methods for promoting smoking cessation. Spent six months of my recent sabbatical working with the Joanne Briggs Institute in Adelaide, Australia, learning a research technique called a `systematic review` to analyse the curricula of programs involving the education of health professionals.
Sheena graduated from Brandon University (2009) with a baccalaureate degree in nursing, is currently an RN working on the Medical/Surgical ward at the Brandon Regional Health Centre, and active with the Brandon Roller Derby League. David has retired, become a house husband, and keeps active by cycling along Highway #10 South. Puffer, our cat, enjoys sleeping 23 hours per day.
I expect to retire from employment sometime in the next five years, and become more like Puffer.
